a mushroom kingdom - super Mario birthday!

Friday, January 19, 2024

when our son asked us for a Mario birthday I paused for a second, because first, a video game theme for a 5 year old?! but seeing how cute the movie was I decided we could make a cute mushroom kingdom theme! my main focus was going to be mushrooms and then I wanted to add small Mario elements like stars and coins. I thought this might give it a fun whimsy clean look. I made my mushrooms out of cardboard, fabric, and pool noodles. super easy, probably took me an hour total to make 5. I ordered these beige circle plates and added a strip of masking tape to make them look like coins. I ordered these gold star plates and add two strips of black tape for cute little eyes. I cut out a few clouds just out of normal poster board paper. I also wanted to add an element of warping into mushroom kingdom so I kept thinking of ways to make life size warp pipes and I found these tubes at Home Depot! my husband cut off about 6 inches with a hand saw so I could glue that piece around and top to give it a pipe look. I spray painted them with the green color eden! the kids had so much fun with these life-size pipes and I think that really tied everything together to really give it the Mario kingdom effect! i surrounded the kids table and our house with these fun lantern mushrooms, (that I can't wait to bring back out in the fall!) our favor bags were mystery bags that I found on amazon, here. I used these wooden blocks to give the brick pixelated effect that Mario runs across in the video game and used tiny Mario character cake toppers on them. I also made a pixelated number 5 out of paint strips for the backdrop. for the longest time I've used wood backdrops for my arch but I found this metal arch set on amazon for a deal I couldn't pass up. it saved me so much time and I love how versatile it is. I ordered these beige covers for it for this particular theme. i never knew how much fun i'd having doing a video game themed birthday but this was probably one of my favorites I've ever done! I hope this inspires you to take a theme and give it a twist of your own to create magic!!

happy celebrating!
